When it comes to alcoholic drinks, there are certain types that stay the same regardless of how many years that have gone by. For example, the same types of beer and cider are consumed now as many years ago. Sure, new brands may come along and try something different but this is quite rare. However, there is one section of the drinks industry that changes with the trends of the world just like fashion - cocktails.
For cocktails, 2016 was a bumper year and this looks set to continue into 2017. With this in mind, we have compiled a short list of our trendiest cocktails that we think you’ll enjoy! ManhattanManhattan Kurman Communications, Inc.
Over the years, this has gone through phases of being popular and it is thought to date right back to the 1870s but 2017 looks as though it could be the year of the Manhattan. Recently, this cocktail barged its way onto the top 10 list of most-ordered drinks and we think you’ll love it.
Ingredients - If you have never had a Manhattan previously, it is essentially made with rye whiskey, Angostura bitters, and sweet vermouth. To finish nicely, add orange peel to the rim of the glass and enjoy. Good Tidings
Although a slightly festive name, this cocktail is perfect for the cold weather at the beginning of the year. As soon as it touches your palate, you will taste the sweet cranberries before the allspice then packs a punch and warms you from the inside.
Ingredients - Starting with a base of vodka, you can then add in a slightly smaller amount of lemon juice, cointreau, cranberry juice, and finish with one spoon of allspice dram. After topping with soda, you will be well away. Old FashionedOld Fashioned Krista
For many years, the Old Fashioned cocktail has been the bar to which all cocktails are compared and this is for good reason. Back in the 1860s, a book was released with directions for an Old Fashioned and, although the elements have changed slightly, it has grown and been adapted ever since. Despite being around for so long, you just can’t take the Old Fashioned out of a conversation discussing trendy cocktails.
Ingredients - Just like a Manhattan, the base is a smooth whiskey before then being combined with bitters, sugar, and a citrus twist. If you have managed to avoid Old Fashioned until now, 2017 could be the year that you make the jump - warning, you won’t look back. MartinezThe Martinez Ann Larie Valentine
Much like two of the previous options, this cocktail was first seen in the 1860/70s just as vermouth was being introduced as a common ingredient in the cocktail world. For many, this is seen as a cocktail that went on to inspire the Martini and perhaps even the Manhattan soon after. All we know is, it tastes delicious and will be popular this year.
Ingredients - For the Martinez, there is a strong core of gin before then adding sweet vermouth, orange bitters, and one spoon of maraschino. After being strained into a coupe glass, it can be served with an orange twist. Fair Verona
Not quite as well known as the rest, Fair Verona is well worth a try but you may have to make it yourself. Despite not reaching all cocktail bars just yet, this is set to be a big one in 2017.
Ingredients - With a fizzy yet liquorice-like taste, you can make the Fair Verona with gin, a dash of absinthe, lemon juice, Kummel, fennel, cumin, and the caraway.
There we have it, five of the trendiest cocktails that will surface or resurface this year. For some, they have been simmering under the surface and, for others, it will be their first time to shine!
